James Hunter

James is unashamedly Australian.  He was born in the country and his first forays on stage was as a bush poet.  In 1996 he was crowned “Gympie Country Music Muster Bush Poets King of Verse”.

“In the final, the first two contestants both recited poems about rural suicide.  I made them laugh and they gave me the prize.”

He said good-bye to bush poetry when he made his debut at The Sit Down Comedy Club with a five minute spot on a Thursday night.  “When I walked on stage that night, I was nervous.  When I walked off, I knew where I wanted to go in life.”

James has since performed regularly at The Sit Down Comedy Club, Comedy Central, The Comedy Club House – Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast as a support to some of Australia’s favourite comics.  “It’s a bit of an adventure – one day, I’m performing at a Rotary luncheon with Sigrid Thornton, the next, I’m doing a gig with Mr Methane.”

Poetry is still a big part of his act.

“People love verse.  They love the stories – you can be anyone and you can take them anywhere.  I think people like to try and anticipate your next rhyme.  Whatever it is, they always listen and then they laugh – and that’s what it’s all about.”

He’s different, he’s original, he’s an Aussie…..and he’s funny!
