Jason Leong
Doctor-turned-comedian Jason Leong has been spreading laughter since winning the 7th International Hong Kong Comedy Competition in 2013. He was voted Crowd Favourite, and earned the distinction of being the first Malaysian to win the contest.
His popularity has snowballed since and he now boasts an international fanbase. In 2018, Leong brought his solo comedy tour Ambitious across Asia, with stops in Singapore, India, Manila, and Hong Kong, before culminating in four sold-out shows at Kuala Lumpur’s Temple of Fine Arts. He was also selected twice to perform for Comedy Central’s Stand-Up Asia, and was the first Malaysian to perform full professional sets at Laugh Factory in Hollywood and the Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. In 2023, Leong made history by becoming the first comedian from Southeast Asia to have two comedy specials on Netflix, Hashtag Blessed (2020) and Ride With Caution (2023).
His biggest career highlight came in July 2022, when he was selected for the New Faces International Showcase at the Just For Laughs (JFL) Montreal 2022 Comedy Festival. The New Faces showcase is the jewel in the crown of the JFL that launched the careers of numerous popular comedians today including Amy Schumer and Kevin Hart. Not only did Leong clinch one of only 10 spots available, he was also the only Malaysia-based Malaysian comic to perform at the prestigious event, and the only talent from the Southeast Asian comedy scene in the line-up.
On the social media front, following the success of his video reviewing his Proton Wira, Dr Jason’s stand-up comedy clip on Whatsapp chatgroups gained mega-viral status after gaining
16 million views and was featured on 9GAG and UNILAD.
