Acclaimed English stand-up comedy powerhouse, Jimmy is one of the UK’s leading comedy lights and is a highly regarded stand-up and compere as well as TV warm-up artist.
A regular on the major UK and international comedy circuits, he is also much in demand as a corporate performer and awards host, having worked with clients including Nissan, Royal Mail, The Forces, CSE, UK Pharmaceutical Marketing Awards, The ECB Stand up for T20 campaign, as well as various publishers and publications.
A naturally funny, real-life style of storytelling punctuated with killer punchlines and beautifully crafted material have seen Jimmy develop into one of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s best loved comedians. He has a quiet, understated power on stage that can erupt into full flight at will, projecting a three-dimensional joke-forcefield and barely allowing his audience time to catch their breath amidst the laughter…
Jimmy’s extensive comedy accomplishments signal quite a departure from his previous work in television in the BBC’s Science and History department. In 2005, he decided that comedy was where his heart was and entered the BBC New Talent Competition and became a finalist. He gigged more and more frequently, leaving the day job in 2009 to undertake his first solo hour-long show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe that August—Jimmy McGhie’s Northern Meeting, which was a stunning debut and was brilliantly well received.
He followed this with 2010’s Jimmy McGhie—The All-Powerful Warrior who with his endurance and inflexible will to win goes from conquest to conquest leaving fire in his wake. His next three solo shows—2011’s Artificial Intelligence, 2014’s Delusions of Candour and 2015’s Winged Goddess of Victory all similarly received excellent reviews.
2016 saw the premiere of his sixth solo festival show, entitled Apologia - in which he makes no apology whatsoever for a brand new hour of pure-and-unadulterated stand-up comedy of the highest order.
As well as regularly headlining and compering in the major clubs across the country including The Comedy Store. Glee, Komedia etc, Jimmy has supported Chris Addison and Simon Bird on their respective UK tours. Internationally he has performed as far and wide as Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, India, Africa, Auckland, across Australia, as well as a few dates in Europe. In fact, Jimmy has toured Australia five times, performing at the Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth Comedy Festivals as well as going on the road with the prestigious Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow.
In 2016, Jimmy will embark on his first European tour alongside Scots comedian Craig Hill.
Jimmy's television appearances include BBC Three’s Live at the Electric, Russell Howard’s Good News, Brexit at Tiffany’s for Foxtel, Australia and two Melbourne International Comedy Festival Oxfam Galas. Jimmy also co-presented the Dave Gorman Radio Show for Absolute Radio.
